Hebrews 11:31 – The Faith of Rahab
Hebrews 11:31 is a verse found in the New Testament of the Bible, within the Book of Hebrews. This book is primarily focused on the supremacy of Christ and the importance of faith in the life of a believer. Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” chapter, as it recounts the lives of various Old Testament figures who exemplified extraordinary faith in God.
The Verse
Hebrews 11:31 states, “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” This verse highlights the faith of Rahab, a Canaanite woman who lived in the city of Jericho.
The Story of Rahab
The story of Rahab is found in the Old Testament book of Joshua, chapters 2 and 6. As the Israelites prepared to conquer the city of Jericho, Joshua sent two spies to gather information about the city’s defenses. Rahab, a prostitute, hid the spies on the roof of her home, which was built into the city wall. When the king of Jericho demanded she hand over the spies, Rahab protected them and lied to the king, claiming the spies had already left the city.
In return for her help, Rahab asked the spies to spare her and her family when the Israelites attacked Jericho. The spies agreed, and Rahab marked her home with a scarlet cord so it would be recognized by the invading forces. The Israelites eventually conquered Jericho, but Rahab and her family were spared due to her faith and assistance.
Significance of Rahab’s Faith
Hebrews 11:31 emphasizes the faith of Rahab, showing that even a person of perhaps questionable background can find redemption through faith in God. Rahab’s actions demonstrated her belief in the God of Israel, despite the cultural and religious differences between her and the Israelites. Her faith ultimately saved her and her family from destruction, and she became a part of the lineage of Jesus Christ, as mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew.
The story of Rahab serves as an encouragement to believers, showing that faith in God can bring about unexpected outcomes and redemption, even in the most challenging circumstances.
