Picture 3 / 4
Jacopo Tintoretto, The Creation of the Animals, c. 1550–53
God sweeps across the picture like a gust of wind, and the animals move with him: the birds in the air, the fish in the water, all in the same direction.
The picture belongs to a cycle of Genesis scenes that Tintoretto painted for the Scuola della Trinità in Venice. Fish and birds were made on the fifth day, the land animals on the sixth. Tintoretto shows both at once: the land animals are already waiting at the edge of the wood.

The fish swim in the same direction in which God flies. Tintoretto painted them one by one, each a different kind.
