Picture 3 / 3
Rembrandt, The Sacrifice of Isaac, 1635
Abraham's large hand covers his son's whole face. The angel seizes his wrist, and the knife is falling; Rembrandt painted it in mid-air.
Rembrandt was twenty-nine and newly successful in Amsterdam when he painted this large canvas. A second version, painted in his workshop a year later, hangs in Munich; there the angel comes from behind.

The knife has slipped from Abraham's hand and has not yet reached the ground.

Abraham's hand covers the face completely. We see the son only as a body, the throat laid bare.
