Masaccio, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (detail), c. 1425–27
No garden and no tree, only the gate and the bare ground. Adam covers his face, Eve her body, and she cries out.
The fresco is narrow, painted on the entrance pier of the Brancacci Chapel. Around 1670 leaves were painted over the bodies; they were removed in the restoration of the 1980s. Michelangelo studied these frescoes as a young man.
Adam hides his face in his hands; Eve throws her head back and wails. Masaccio gives the two different kinds of shame.
