Luke 1
The text tells the story of the announcement and birth of John the Baptist and Jesus. An angel named Gabriel visits Zacharias and Elisabeth, telling Zacharias that Elisabeth will bear a son named John, who will be a great and holy man. Gabriel also visits Mary, telling her that she will bear a son named Jesus, who will be the Son of the Most High and will rule over the house of Jacob forever.
The text describes the story of Zacharias, a priest, and his wife Elisabeth, who are unable to have children and are very old. While Zacharias is in the Temple performing his duties, he sees an angel who tells him that Elisabeth will bear a son named John, who will be a great leader in the eyes of the Lord. The angel also tells Zacharias that he will be unable to speak until the event occurs due to his lack of faith. The story then shifts to the virgin Mary in Galilee, who is visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she will bear a son named Jesus, who will be the Son of the Most High and rule over the house of Jacob forever. Mary is initially confused and asks how this can happen as she has not been with a man, to which Gabriel explains that the conception will be through the power of the Holy Spirit. Mary agrees to bear the child and the story ends with her visiting her cousin Elisabeth, who is pregnant with John.
