Altobello Melone, The Road to Emmaus, c. 1516–17
The stranger on the road is dressed as a pilgrim, with hat and staff. The two disciples talk to him and do not know who he is.
Luke says that their eyes were holden, so that they should not know him. Painters solved this by dressing Christ as a traveller; Cleopas calls him a stranger in Jerusalem. Hat and staff are those of the pilgrims of Melone's own time.

Christ turns towards the two. Under the broad hat his face is easy to recognise, for us.
