Giotto, The Adoration of the Magi, c. 1320
Mary lies under a wooden roof; Joseph stands at the left with a gift in his hands. The oldest king has knelt down, laid his crown on the ground and lifts the child out of the manger. Two more kings wait behind him.
The small panel belongs to a series of seven scenes from the life of Christ that is now divided among museums in Europe and America. That a king takes the child into his own hands is rare. At the upper left the angel appears to the shepherds: Giotto joins the two visits in one picture.

The old king holds the child as carefully as something that might break.

His crown lies on the bare ground.
