Fra Angelico, The Last Judgment, c. 1431
Christ sits in a ring of angels above a row of opened graves that runs into the depth of the picture. On the left the blessed are led into a garden; on the right devils drive the damned into the pits of hell.
The unusual outline with its three arches comes from the place the panel was made for: probably the back of the priest's seat in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar, and his paradise is more carefully painted than his hell.

Angels and the blessed dance in a ring among the flowers, hand in hand.

The graves are empty; their stone lids lie beside them.

Hell is divided into chambers, one for each sin, with Satan at the bottom.
