The Baptism of Christ

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

For January: three paintings of the baptism in the Jordan.

Christ stands in the shallow river with folded hands, pale as a column. John pours water over him from a bowl, and directly above hovers the dove. Three angels watch from the left; behind, a man pulls his shirt over his head.

John, lean and sinewy, pours water over the head of Christ, who stands in the stream with folded hands. Above them two hands open in the sky and send down the dove. On the bank two angels kneel with Christ's robe.

A blue-green landscape of rocks, river and distance fills the picture. In front John kneels on the bank and pours water over Christ, who stands in the river up to his knees. Above them God the Father looks out of a cloud.
