Picture 1 / 4
Lucas Cranach the Elder, Adam and Eve, 1526
Eve hands the apple on, and Adam scratches his head. Around them the animals of paradise still lie side by side in peace.
Cranach and his workshop painted Adam and Eve dozens of times. This panel of 1526 is among the richest: the garden is full of animals, and none of them is afraid of another. Cranach signed on the trunk of the tree, with his winged serpent and the year.

Adam already holds the apple and scratches his head. Eve looks at him; with her other hand she holds on to a branch.

The serpent hangs in the branches directly above the two and watches.
