Picture 2 / 4
Titian, The Fall of Man, c. 1550
In Titian's version Adam is seated and puts his hand against Eve as if to hold her back. She reaches up all the same, towards a serpent with the body of a child.
Titian took the poses from a fresco by Raphael in the Vatican and from Dürer's engraving, and made them heavier and more hesitant. Rubens saw the picture in Madrid in 1628 and painted a copy; both hang in the Prado today.

The serpent has the upper body of a child and hands Eve the fruit like a playmate.

Adam's hand on Eve is the only resistance in the picture, and it is not a strong one.
