The Bible in Pictures

God the Father holds the cross with the Son before him; above them hovers the dove. Around the Trinity the saints are gathered in the clouds, and below them the Christians on earth, from pope and emperor to a peasant with his flail.

The Nuremberg merchant Matthäus Landauer ordered the picture for the chapel of the home he had founded for twelve old craftsmen; it was dedicated to the Trinity and All Saints. Dürer also designed the carved frame. The emperor Rudolf II later brought the painting to Prague.
